Film Screening: Counted Out

October 22, 2025

Counted Out shows us the power of math in our society, our economy, and our democracy.

Do you consider yourself to be “a math person” or not? Have you noticed that math is used to sort winners from losers in schools and society?

In the current information economy, math is everywhere. The people we date, the news we see, the influence of our votes, the candidates who win elections, the education we have access to, the jobs we get—all of it is underwritten by an invisible layer of math that few of us understand or even notice. Whether or not we learn to speak the language of math is a critical determinant of our social and economic power.

Counted Out shows us the power of math that undergirds our democracy. Who holds that power? Who doesn’t? And how can we all speak the language of math to fully participate in a world that belongs to everyone?

Counted Out has been selected to screen at dozens of film festivals, including the San Francisco International Film Festival, South by Southwest EDU, and Original Thinkers in Telluride, Colorado. Across the country, we are growing the conversation about the math crisis in America whose solution is at our fingertips and how it impacts the quality of our lives, the future of our society, and the health of our democracy.

Wednesday, October 22, from 3:00–5:00 p.m.
